Right, picture this. You've dragged yourself to the gym, good for you, genuinely, you've got your app out, scanned the little code like a law-abiding citizen, and the door clicks open. Magic. Except there's a bloke right on your heels who hasn't scanned a single thing and is now walking in alongside you like he owns the place.
So what do you do?
This is the question one gym-goer lobbed into the internet this week and honestly, it's more philosophically loaded than it has any right to be. Because there's a whole spectrum of options here and none of them are great.
Option one: say something. 'Scuse me mate, you need to scan in.' Fine in theory. But then what? What if he goes 'yeah it's on my phone, one sec'? Are you standing there holding the door like a hotel concierge waiting for proof? What if he just... walks past you? You going to rugby tackle him into the rowing machines?
Option two: say nothing. Feel vaguely complicit. Spend the entire workout glancing over wondering if this bloke is a member or just someone who fancied a free go on the cable machine.
Option three: attempt to close the door while he's mid-stride. Absolute chaos. You're not a bouncer. You didn't sign up for door security when you paid your direct debit.
The gym, of course, has installed this system precisely so staff don't have to deal with this, and then left members in the awkward position of either enforcing it themselves or feeling like a grass for reporting it.
It's a classic bit of outsourced responsibility dressed up as a tech solution. 'The app handles it!' No mate, Karen from the treadmill handles it now, apparently.
For what it's worth: a quick 'oh, do you need to scan?' is perfectly reasonable. After that, it's not your problem. You're not on the payroll.
But what would you do, say something, say nothing, or develop a sudden interest in your trainers? Let us know below.
